Hi. My name is Paul Hunter. I hope you’ll indulge me for a couple of minutes as I give you a flavour of my background and tell you a little bit about me as a person and as a coach.
I had a reasonably ok childhood, got on brilliantly with my Mom and not so well with my Dad, did reasonably well in school and in 1983, went to UCC to study Psychology. I had been reading self help books about positivity, creative visualisation and self growth for a while before I went to college and was fascinated by human beings and their problems and challenges. I was very excited about studying psychology before going to college and sorely disappointed and disillusioned once I sampled the reality of the psychology course. I just wanted to help people to overcome their emotional difficulties and all this course seemed to want me to do was write assignments where I wasn’t allowed to have an opinion and marks seemed to be allocated more for the style of your writing rather than your understanding of the topic.
So, when I left college the last thing I wanted to do was to become a psychologist. Instead, I took the path of least resistance and, because I was a reasonably good communicator, I went into sales. I became a business to business sales rep with a company car and lots of targets. And I was very good at it. I never really took the time to ask myself if I really wanted to be in sales. It paid the mortgage and put food on the table and gave me a relatively nice lifestyle so it was fine. I gradually got more and more senior roles in sales until one day, at the age of forty, I found myself sitting at a boardroom table thinking that if every one of the directors who were sat around that table dropped dead I wouldn’t really care. And that was the moment that I realised I had to find the career path that would make me want to get out of bed in the morning.
That led me first of all to qualifying as a Clinical Hypnotherapist. Since 2009 I have been helping people to overcome smoking, weight problems, anxiety problems, depression, etc. through hypnotherapy. I also studied NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy), and life coaching.
My skill in helping people is greatly enhanced by my listening and communication skills. I very quickly summarise the main action steps we need to agree upon and then communicate powerfully with you to create an action plan to achieve your goals.
